Fortified buildings
Musgrove tower and Red lion
The town retains two old fortified buildings,
supposed to have been the residences at different periods of the bailiffs of
the town.
Musgrove
Tower at the east end of the town is an ancient and massive tower, the walls
of which are several feet in thickness; it is loop holed and has a parapet
carried on corbel., and a stone staircase rising to the roof: the building
has been modernized and converted into a dwelling-house, but the floors and
roof, which consisted of stone flags laid on roughly-hewn oak trees, have
been removed.
The
Red Lion hotel consists in part of a strongly built embattled tower, the
walls, from 4 to 7 feet thick, being loop holed on the west side is a stone
staircase rising to the upper floors, which are supported by roughly hewn
beams; the front has been plastered and painted, but the parts facing north
and east remain in their original state. In the parish are also the ruins of
five other towers, three of which have been converted into farmhouses. The
Castle hill is a natural mound, the summit of which is defended on three
sides by earthworks, 4 feet in height.
